Car exports from India up by 35.73 per cent in first half of 2009: SIAM - 2/12/2010
according to the latest data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). It is to be mentioned that out of the total units clocked, Hyundai India and Maruti Suzuki accounted for a major chunk due to the scrappage schemes announced in Europe. While Maruti’s sales in the overseas markets shot up by two times at 65,752 units from 29,699 units in the year-ago period, Hyundai Motor India posted a 16.02 per cent jump in exports at 1,39,971 units, vis-à-vis 1,20,648 units in the same period last year.
"The question is whether you will see European car market growing once the scrappage programme is taken back. So we are cautiously optimistic for the export sector in this fiscal," SIAM director general Dilip Chenoy told reporters while announcing the sales figures. SIAM said exports of the total passenger vehicles, including utility cars, was up by 34.29 per cent in the six months at 211,645 as against 157,601 units in the same period last year.
The total two-wheeler exports, however, declined by 1.30 per cent to 512,939 units as against 519,684 units in April-September last fiscal, with motorcycle exports also declining marginally at 4,97,611 units compared with 5,02,031 units.
Exports of commercial vehicles also dropped by 35.66 per cent at 17,466 units during April-September this fiscal from 27,146 units in the year-ago period.
The overall vehicle exports from India shot up by 4.41 per cent during the first half of this financial year at 808,455 units as compared to 774,302 units during the same period of last fiscal.
As far as the domestic market is concerned, passenger vehicles segment during April-September 2009 grew at 13.46 per cent over same period last year. Passenger cars grew by 14.75 per cent, utility vehicles grew marginally by 3.47 per cent and multi purpose vehicles grew by 21.90 per cent in this period.
The overall commercial vehicles segment still registered negative growth at (-) 0.52 per cent during April-September 2009 as compared to the same period last year. While medium & heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) registered de-growth at (-) 18.95 per cent, light commercial vehicles grew at 19.54 per cent. In medium & heavy commercial vehicles segment, both passenger and goods carrier segments registered de-growth with growth rate being (-) 15.42 per cent and (-) 19.69 per cent respectively.
Three-wheelers sales recorded a growth rate of 12.37 per cent in April-September 2009. While passenger carriers grew by 20.23 per cent during April-September 2009, goods carriers declined at (-) 10.95 per cent.
Two-wheelers registered a growth of 15.68 per cent during April-September 2009. Mopeds, scooters and motorcycles grew by 26.36 per cent, 18.29 per cent and 14.93 per cent respectively.
